Unlocking future opportunities in renewable energy to enhance sustainable developments
The Indian renewable energy sector has shown impressive growth in last few years and investments into the sector have increased significantly. By 2012, the Indian government expects its renewable energy to contribute 10% of the total power generation capacity and have a 4-5% share in the electricity mix.
India is ranked as the third most attractive country to invest in renewable energy, after USA and Germany, in the Ernst and Young Country Attractiveness Indices. However, investments into projects still lag behind expectations and market potential is not being fully realised. Policy and regulatory frameworks are an important factor to promote investments and policies must guide investments into projects that can improve energy production.
In spite of all the enthusiasm and activities in renewable energy, Alexis Ringwald in her «India Renewable Energy Trends» said, the sector is still at nascent stage. One of the most significant issues is the «capital barrier», a gap between the Indian cleantech entrepreneurs who requires anywhere between $100, 000 and $2 million to fund the early stages of research and development. However, currently many renewable energy projects developers have turn to carbon credits as one of the source for funds. A report from the World Bank says India is the second largest seller of carbon credits in the world with a 6% share in 2007, while China tops the list with a 73% share.
India’s quest for energy security and sustainable development rests a great deal on the ability to tap energy from renewable sources, and to use it extensively to meet the growing and diverse needs. With faster economic growth, the demand for energy will rise further, and there will be a need to supplement the energy requirements by harnessing renewable sources of energy.
Renewable Energy seeks to explore what is driving the market and where the future opportunities lie. This event aims to address the current situation, key drivers, structural issues; latest developments & updates in renewable energy.
